Ɫq̓st/Pyropia Project
Supporting Indigenous Stewardship and Restoration
The Ɫq̓st/Pyropia Project supports the restoration, stewardship, and long-term sustainability of Pyropia within Haíɫzaqv Territory. Through community participation, Indigenous knowledge, scientific research, and collaborative partnerships, the project focuses on sample collection, biobanking, restoration planning, and the preservation of culturally significant seaweed resources for future generations.
Sample Collection and Biobanking
In 2026, Heiltsuk Climate Action initiated the active collection phase of the Ɫq̓st/Pyropia Project. Reproductive Pyropia samples were collected throughout Haíɫzaqv Territory for biobanking and future restoration efforts.
Samples were documented, preserved, and stored with partner organizations to support conservation, research, and future re-planting activities. This work represents an important step toward safeguarding culturally significant Pyropia resources for future generations.
Haíɫzaqv Kelp Symposium
The Haíɫzaqv Kelp Symposium brought together community members, researchers, harvesters, industry representatives, and Indigenous leaders to explore stewardship, restoration, governance, and economic opportunities related to kelp and seaweed resources.
Future Restoration Work
Current efforts will inform future restoration activities, including the re-planting of samples, continued monitoring, and the development of community-led stewardship approaches.
